Dr. Thomas Lane Butts: Freedom Is Never Cheap
Dr. Thomas Lane Butts: Freedom Is Never Cheap Freedom Is Never Cheap As we celebrate Independence Day, how can we remind this generation that many people died to give us a unique freedom about which so many seem so casual? There are countless examples of courage that have preserved our freedom. Let me tell you one of them. In his book, And No Bird Sang, Farley Mowatt tells a touching story that comes from the Canadian Armed Forces’ involvement in the assault on Sicily and Rome during World War II. Mowatt was a very young, eager, sensitive and idealistic junior officer. He had a colleague by the name of Alex Campbell who was just the opposite. Alex was wounded early in the war, but returned from a North African hospital for a final battle near the end of Mowatt’s account. While in the hospital he had tried his hand at poetry, which he timidly shared with Mowatt when he returned. When Mowatt read the poetry and saw that this scathless pillar of a man had been afraid too, he was shocked. The poem was a prayer that he would be able to manage his fear in such a way that the men he led would say of him afterward: “He was a man”. On Christmas Day a bone-weary sergeant returned from a terrible battle in which Campbell’s company had been cut to pieces. That is how Mowatt found out how Alex Campbell died. Seventh Platoon had been pinned down by murderous machine gun fire. The logical move for Campbell would have been to use one of the other platoons to outflank the guns, but instead he did the unexpected–and inexplicable. Seizing a tommy gun, he drew his great bulk to its full height, gave an inarticulate bellow, and charged straight at the enemy.

What God Has Put Asunder, Let No Man Join Together
What God Has Put Asunder, Let No Man Join Together When you attend church this or any other Sunday, you are validating a noble experiment that has made these United States the most religiously diverse nation in the world. You are neither compelled to attend a certain church, nor are you restricted from attending. The worship you engage in, the hymns you sing, the sermons you listen to are not regulated by the government. We are guaranteed by the First Amendment the freedom to worship as our conscience dictates. We have religious liberty. We have the separation of church and state. However, for the past two decades this freedom has been under attack. On this weekend let us underscore our birthright of religious freedom as we celebrate the birth of our nation. Secular forces are defending the First Amendment to the extent that they will go to jail for it; and Christians are, for the first time in their history, hearing their leaders calling for its destruction. The strange and arresting feature of this controversy is that it is being introduced into our political life by those whose tradition is to fight and die for religious liberty. When the shouting is over, those who have weakened this separation will be called upon to answer to history for their violation of this sacred trust. The struggle between church and state is long and varied. It reaches back to the high moments of the Old Testament and continues through the New Testament. In the church history we see it also and on into this present day.

Why Don’t You Wash Your Hands?
Why Don’t You Wash Your Hands? The gospel for today might leave some of us thinking that the Pharisees and scribes are acting a bit silly, making such a fuss. All that happened was a few of Jesus’ disciples neglecting to wash their hands before they eat. But as with all religious ritual, it helps to know some of the meaning behind the act. The Pharisaic tradition of washing one’s hands before eating was a long one. Since the Book of Exodus when the Law was given to the Israelites, it was required that the high priest, before he even entered the temple, ritually washed both his hands and his feet. Over the years since that time, it had become the norm for all followers of the Pharisaic tradition, not just the priests, to wash their hands before eating, as a way of identifying with the high priest, and, more importantly, as a way of sanctifying the particular act of eating. They were actually following a sort of “priesthood of all believers” motif, doing the same thing as the priest, and so expressing their ability and necessity to be in the presence of the holy. Special prayers and ritual acts of cleaning surrounded other common acts of life as well. What is important to see here is that the followers of the Pharisaic tradition, by performing these external rites and acts, hoped to sanctify the common things of life, hoped to make holy the rather common act of eating. They wanted to add a religious dimension to everything they did. For the Pharisees, then, these were not just empty acts, without meaning.
